Thank you Jennifer Wentz for a great story she wrote for the Hanover Evening Sun about the possible activities to complete the Grand History TrailĀ in Adams County.
Here’s an excerpt:
“It started with a map sketched on a napkin about 10 years ago.
Don Gogniat, a past board member of the York County Rail Trail Authority, and Gwen Loose, the authority’s current executive director, dreamed of a loop connecting sections of already-established bicycle trails, from York County’s Heritage Rail Trail to C&O Canal in Maryland and Washington, D.C.
They soon added historic sites like Gettysburg National Military Park and the National Mall, and after connecting the dots, they had a jagged 250-mile loop connecting major cities and bike routes from Washington to Adams County.
They called it the Grand History Trail, and 10 years after that initial drawing, it is about halfway complete. Other large chunks, including sections through York County and Frederick, Maryland, are in the planning stages.
The proposed trail, though, has one major gap: a stretch between Gettysburg and northern Maryland. Another Adams County section from Hanover to Gettysburg is in the planning stages, but no work has been completed on it in years. These routes represent the largest undeveloped sections of the 250-mile trail. Gogniat, Loose and other trail advocates hope to change that.”
